Project Description

The Grant Line Road Widening Project in Elk Grove was a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety along a crucial corridor. This project expanded the existing two-lane Grant Line Road between Waterman Road and Bradshaw Road into a four-lane thoroughfare. The improvements included new roadway construction, grinding and overlaying of existing surfaces, installation of curb ramps, sidewalks, and bike paths to promote multimodal transportation. Additionally, the project encompassed the development of new signalized intersections, upgrades to storm drainage systems, the construction of a 16-inch potable water transmission main, and landscaping to enhance the roadway’s aesthetic appeal.

Due to the existing traffic conditions, the project required multi-stage construction to minimize disruptions. Extensive coordination with third-party utilities such as SMUD, Frontier, WAVE, and Kinder Morgan was essential for the relocation of utilities. Furthermore, collaboration with the Central Main Irrigation District (CMID) and the Sacramento County Water Agency (SCWA) was necessary for the successful construction of the water line.

This widening project was part of the broader Capital SouthEast Connector Expressway, a planned 34-mile expressway designed to improve regional connectivity by linking Interstate 5 south of Elk Grove to U.S. Route 50 in El Dorado County. The Connector aimed to provide a more efficient route for commuters and freight, thereby alleviating congestion on existing highways.

The Grant Line Road segment played a critical role in this effort, serving as a key component of the expressway. Improvements to Grant Line Road near the southern end of Bradshaw Road were successfully completed, and development of a Precise Roadway Plan with roundabouts was planned for the rural Sheldon Area community between Bond Road and Calvine Road.

The project's comprehensive approach ensured that the upgraded infrastructure met current and future transportation demands, significantly improving roadway capacity and safety while supporting economic development and quality of life in Elk Grove and the surrounding regions.
