Bikeway 99 Phase 5 Project

Project Description

The Bikeway 99 Phase 5 Project is a pivotal infrastructure initiative undertaken by the City of Chico to enhance its bicycle network and promote sustainable transportation. This phase focuses on constructing a Class I bikeway overcrossing at East 20th Street, significantly improving access to local businesses and providing a safe, dedicated pathway for cyclists and pedestrians.

A central feature of this project is the installation of a 190-foot steel arch bridge spanning East 20th Street within the Caltrans right-of-way. The erection of the arches and box beam necessitates meticulous planning and specialized expertise to ensure structural integrity and safety. Critical considerations include geometry control, pre-cambering, welding sequences, and the assembly order, all of which influence the precise fit of fabricated elements. The construction process involves the use of approximately 4,000 structural bolts, with particular attention to the four arch splice locations to address alignment challenges. Accurate surveying of the box beam connections and pedestal locations is essential prior to erection, and verification of the centerlines for Bent 6 and Bent 7—positioned on each side of East 20th Street—is crucial post-construction to ensure proper alignment between the two concrete structures.

Upon completion, the Bikeway 99 Corridor will serve as a continuous alternative transportation and recreational route, spanning nearly 7 miles from Eaton Road to Skyway. This project addresses the current lack of a safe and direct pedestrian and bicycle path, which has previously discouraged residents from walking or biking to local schools, job centers, commercial areas, and public services. By closing this critical gap, the project will connect people to essential goods and services, including the Chico Mall, thereby promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing vehicular traffic.

The successful execution of the Bikeway 99 Phase 5 Project reflects the City of Chico's commitment to enhancing community connectivity, safety, and the overall quality of life for its residents.
