Stanislaus River Bridge Replacement
Project Description
The Stanislaus River Bridge Replacement Project was a significant infrastructure initiative undertaken by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to enhance the safety and reliability of State Route 99 at the San Joaquin/Stanislaus County line. The existing southbound bridge, originally constructed in 1928, had been identified as structurally deficient due to ongoing deterioration and corrosion, necessitating its replacement.
Knight CM Group personnel provided specialized structures construction inspection services for this project, ensuring adherence to all federal, state, and local standards throughout the construction process. Our role involved close coordination with Caltrans and other stakeholders to maintain stringent safety protocols, quality assurance, and environmental compliance.
The project scope encompassed the removal of the existing 206-foot-long concrete arch structure and replacement with a new two-span composite steel plate girder bridge, supported by concrete piers founded on driven Class 200 Alternative "W" steel pipe piles. Key construction activities included trestle construction, installation of temporary supports, bridge removal, placement of seal courses, cofferdam installation, pile driving, steel girder erection, and deck construction with profile grading based on the existing structure. Additionally, coordination with the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), implementation of a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), and biological monitoring were integral components of the project to ensure environmental compliance and minimal disruption to surrounding ecosystems.
The successful completion of this project resulted in a durable and reliable infrastructure improvement, enhancing connectivity and safety for the region while minimizing environmental impacts. This bridge replacement not only addressed the structural deficiencies of the previous bridge but also improved the overall resilience of the transportation network in the area.
