Ord Ferry Bridge Replacement

Project Description

In June 2023, Butte County received approval to move forward with the Ord Ferry Road Bridge Replacement Project, located about 3.5 miles west of Dayton at Little Chico Creek. The federally funded project, administered through Caltrans' Highway Bridge Program, replaced the existing narrow bridge with a new 640-foot-long, 43-foot-wide multi-span flat-slab bridge built along the same alignment. Construction was originally planned to be staged over two seasons, using signalized traffic controls to maintain one lane of traffic. However, Steelhead Constructors Inc completed the entire bridge in one season. The work consists of clearing and grubbing, detour traffic control, removing the existing bridge and constructing a cast-in-place reinforced concrete slab bridge, site grading, hot mix asphalt and aggregate base roadway section, drainage facilities and permanent erosion control. Knight CM Group (KCM) provided assistant resident engineering and structure representative duties, office engineering, construction inspection, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Butte County standards. Given the project’s proximity to overhead high voltage lines and work within Litle Chico Creek, PGE and permitting agencies coordination was critical. The County and KCM's team managed all aspects of coordination, including documentation, inspection, scheduling, and ensuring that construction activities minimized impacts to PGE and the environment. Additionally, construction engineering plans, including a temporary bridge, stream diversions and Temporary Works drawings affecting were reviewed for adequacy and protection.
