The City of Chico's Bikeway 99 Phase 5 Project includes building a Class I bikeway overcrossing at East 20th Street to enhance access to local businesses. A key component of the project is a 190-foot steel arch spanning 20th Street within Caltrans right-of-way. Erecting the arches and box beam will require careful planning and specialized expertise to ensure structural integrity and safety. Critical factors include geometry control, pre-cambering,welding sequence, and assembly order, all of which can affect the fit of fabricated elements. Approximately 4,000 structural bolts will be used, with specific challenges at the four arch splice locations due to alignment issues. Precise surveying of the box beam connection and pedestal location is necessary before erection and Bent 6 and Bent 7's centerlines (each side of 20th Street) must be verified post-construction to ensure proper fit between the two concrete structures.
